TEAMWORK

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

This term in P.E, 5th year classes have been completing different team work challenges.  The aim was to encourage an awareness of team dynamics, what aspects of each girl’s participation, contributed positively or negatively to the team, was each team successful in achieving their goals, did your team share the same goals, etc.

Team work is an invaluable life long lesson.  Even if an individual prefers to work alone or is more successful in individually oriented tasks, there are numerous occasions in all our lives where team work is necessary. Especially when it comes to leaving school and entering university or the working world.  In the end success alone can be great but success when shared can be amazing, no one can make it alone.

I hope you enjoy reading the girls posts on this issue and please comment and share your thoughts.

Enjoy mid-term,

Ms.Sturdyteamwork

So what does it mean to be Healthy??

Being healthy is more than being physically fit.

Keeping yourself healthy emotionally, physically, and spiritually will help you build and develop a happy and productive life.

A healthy body and mind will make it easier for you to survive your teenager years. Looking after your body by exercising regularly, eating well, getting regular sleep and reducing stress can make you feel good. Feeling good about yourself can affect the way you think and feel. It can give you the confidence to help you to achieve what you want in life.

Here are some tips on how to live a healthy life and to look after yourself.

Be Active: While sitting in front of the computer, television or computer all evening may be enjoyable, it is not the path to a healthy life. Instead you should get up and do something! Exercising isn’t always doing 100 press ups, followed by half an hour run and then doing 100 sit-ups. It is about finding what is right for you. You can even do something as simple as going for a walk, joining a dance class, or swimming, and to enjoy it even more you can get your friend to join with you too. You should try to do something every day but we know it is not always possible. Think more about the benefits instead of moaning about having to exercise. You will be healthier; you will sleep better and feel better too!

Your Body: Basically you are what you eat. If all you eat is fast food and sweets you will know you are not leading a healthy lifestyle. So you need to take care of your body and think about what you’re putting into your mouth. I’m not  saying you should never have sweets or sugary foods but you shouldn’t have an excessive amount either. Food gives you energy, vitamins and minerals for your everyday life. You need to eat a variety of healthy foods, and eat an adequate amount of each, to keep you fuelled up each day. It only takes small changes in the way you eat, and balance healthy eating with being active.

Sleep well: You need sleep. It’s really important because this is when your body does most of its growing.

Water: Without water, your body would stop working properly. Water makes up more than half of your body weight and a person can’t survive for more than a few days without it. Why you ask? Your body has lots of important jobs and it needs water to do many of them. For example, your blood, which contains a lot of water, carries oxygen to all the cells of your body. Without oxygen, those tiny cells would die and your body would stop working. On average we should drink 8 ounce glasses a day. Do you drink that much? Maybe now is the time to start!

Express Yourself: Try not to keep everything bottled up inside. It is not healthy to hold onto tension. By talking your problems out, or by even writing them out in a diary it will make you feel better. You will feel like you can let them go. You don’t have to show anyone what you have done it is just for yourself.

Relax: Don’t forget to just take a time out now and again. You can just spend  watch some television, go out with some friends or go into town or anything. Just do something. Do whatever you enjoy and what makes you feel good.

The greatest wealth is health.  ~ Virgil

Health Week 2010
During the week of the 19th of September Heath Week 2010 took place in our school Loreto, Navan. It has been regular event for the past 5 years and has been greatly appreciated and supported during these years. Health week is a great way of learning about ways to be healthy, how to exercise correctly and having fun while in an active environment. Different events and talks took place throughout the week for different year groups which are widely enjoyed.

On Monday there was a dance workshop for all 3rd years.

On Tuesday an organisation called BodyWhys came to the school to talk about eating disorders with all 3rd years. Also on Tuesday, a physio from Johnstown Clinic held talks with the 2nd years. Finally a more physical event was held for 5th years which included a track and trail course and archery class.

On Wednesday 6th years were given a talk on relaxation techniques by Carmel Finnegan and 1st and 3rd years went to a skin care workshop.

On Thursday a healthy living talk was held for all 5th year classes with Bernadette Bohan. 6th years gave talks to all 1st and 2nd years on topics that are important for both year groups.

Health Week 2010 was finished up with Sports Day on Friday which involved all year groups. Each class were competing against each other to win challenges and events. There were challenges such as, sack-race, egg and spoon, long distance running, welly throws, slow bike, race obstacle courses and finally at the end of the day a teacher –v- student rounders match. Sports day was enjoyed by all and was a great way to end a very successful Health Week.

Health Week Fun!

Health Week Fun!

Hey there!

First off, welcome to our brand new P.E blog! Our aim for this blog is to show the world what it is we do in P.E., what we think of P.E and how we feel about P.E. As the year goes on, there will be different posts and themes up about our P.E. classes, which you can follow each week!

During each term we focus on one specific module, for example, athletics, dance, team games, net games etc. Each module will be completely different each term so you’ll have something different to read each time you visit our blog :) We have one double class of P.E. a week, both 35minute classes. We then also have one P.E. computer class to allow us to work on this and keep you updated :)

We hope you enjoy cruising around our blog! Feel free to leave us comments on what you think of our blogs/posts whenever you can, we’d appreciate your input :)
